The Couch

While living in Chile my husband and I decided to splurge and treat ourselves with a brand new couch, very exciting… except for when it arrived we then realized it wasn’t going to fit through the front door of our fourth floor apartment.

It is a chunky couch but it never crossed our minds to actually take measurements before purchasing. My first to-go place for help was facebook and guess what?  “ Yo te lo subo” (translated from Spanish “I’ll take it up”) is  a bunch of very clever firemen that are making a killing (when they’re not putting out fires) using ropes and all the climbing gear and skill to move furniture where elevators and doors aren’t the right size! After a lot of technical placing of ropes and planning their operation, our couch was finally brought in through the back balcony… so relieved and impressed with these guys (I really want to add: good-looking fire guys!).

So we finally get to enjoy our brand new very comfortable sofa, big enough for both of us to lie at the same time!  A year later we decide we’re moving to Costa Rica so yes, you’ve guessed it….We had to call the firemen again, this time to take Chunky down! 🙂

Your couch is an important piece of furniture. And a great way to bring style to your home is by using throw pillows. Flexibility is one of the reasons throw pillows are the easiest way to change the look of any room.

Now, there are 3 tips I consider important when choosing and decorating with throw pillows:

1. Consider the size of the pillows:  Pick a pillow that’s too big, and the couch will be lost in the background. Pick a pillow too small and it will be lost. Pillows are  like accents to a piece not an actual piece itself.

2. Decide how many pillows are needed:  Too many and for sure they’ll end up on the floor! If you are after a more eclectic or modern look, the rule of odd numbers applies.

You have a sectional couch??? Group two or three pillows on each end of the couch and in the middle.

And finally….

3. Mix Pillow Patterns and Textures: Your pillows don’t need to be the same, go crazy! Mixing can be scary but online you can get inspiration with color schemes and patterns.

My pro tip is to first pick a solid color pillow, the rest of the throw pillows can complement. Then, when picking your patterned pillow, choose one or two that feature the same solid color in the pattern.

At the end of the day, remember that pillows are not permanent, you can always change them. So don’t get overwhelmed and just enjoy bringing a fresh look to your home!
